Steel is considered as “stainless steel” when it contains a minimum of 11% chromium in its alloying elements. The main advantages of stainless steels are their good corrosion resistance and excellent performance in low and very low temperatures. They are used primarily in the chemical, pharmacy and food sectors as well as in cryogenic applications. Some grades can be used at very high temperatures (>540°C). The percentage of each alloying element determines to what extent a grade is able to resist to temperature and particular types of corrosive agents.
Despite their general resistance to corrosion, certain types of corrosion must nevertheless be taken into account (inter granular corrosion, pitting, stress cracking) in both choice of material used and in its implementation.
