The Ethylene cracking process

Ethylene does not exist in nature, in the petrochemical industry, ethylene is obtained either from rich natural gas ethane (C2H6) ethane molecule by pyrolysis or cracking at high temperature (USA) or from naphtha from fractional distillation of petroleum (Europe) by steam cracking

The Ethylene craking enters in the Ethylene (C2H4) ethylene molecule manufacturing process. Ethylene is a raw material used for the production of synthetic rubbers and plastics and other chemical processes. The Ethylene golbal production capacity in 2020 is estimated at 200 Million Tons, it represents an increasing production of 60 Million Tons in the 5 next years.

The issue
The cracking process involves breaking up the carbon and hydrogen molecules and rearranging them. Craking is accomplished by heating ethane to a temperature greater than 800°C in the cracker furnace. These heaters (that provide energy into the process) suffer from a phenomen where deposits of ‘coke’ accrue on the pipework and valves. The coke particules can drop into the valve body during the opening-closing phase and damage the sealing system. The "coke" is sticky and adheres to the surfaces; by accumulating it can block the velve operation. Moreover its hardness is similar to cement and sometimes jackhammers are used to remove it.

From time to time these desposits must be removed, ideally without shutting down the process completely. In order to perform the decokeing operation there are two valves, the transfer line valve (TLV) and the decoke valve, whose positions must be reversed. This operation is critical as the process product – ethylene, is a volatile substance and has a low flash point, therefore imposing a fire and explosion risk if it is vented to the atmosphere.
